Sweet Chocolate was developed by Elwyn Meader and introduced by the University of New Hampshire in 1965. The elongated fruit grows 8 to 10 inches long and has thick, crunchy flesh. The fruit starts green, turning chocolate brown with brick-red interior flesh, and finally ripens scarlet red. Best harvested at full color, the peppers are exceptionally sweet, high in sugar, and rich in flavor, with mild earthiness, light smokiness, and cocoa-like undertones without the sharp bitterness sometimes found in bell peppers. Excellent fresh for snacking, dips, salads, and sandwiches, they also work well stuffed, roasted, or grilled, where their natural sugars caramelize and deepen the flavor. Fruit picked too early can taste bitter. Bred for cooler northern, short-season climates. Heirloom.

Did you know? Humidity can reduce the viability of pepper seeds over time, causing  seeds to stagnate. That’s why every seed pack includes a silica gel packet to help keep the seeds dry and fresh. To save seeds for next year, place the seed packet and silica gel packet together in a quart-size freezer bag, seal it, and store it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.
