Despite its name, Portugal Hot peppers were first grown in 1935 by Joseph Harris & Company in Coldwater, New York. The elongated fruit grows 5 to 7 inches long and has a crisp, juicy texture. Their flavor combines the sweet, fruity base of a bell pepper with the subtle citrus notes, light smokiness, and cayenne-like heat. The fruit closely resembles a Jimmy Nardello pepper, so label plants carefully if growing both. Heat can range from Jalapeño-like warmth to Tabasco-level intensity. Use the fruit in soups, stews, chili, stir-fries, or dried and ground for spice that pairs well with pork, beef, poultry, and seafood. One of the earliest ripening hot peppers you can grow. Heirloom.

  • Heat: Medium to Hot (5,000 - 50,000 SHU)
  • Height: 24 - 36in
  • Harvest: 65 - 80 days from transplant
  • Pack includes 25 seeds

Did you know? Humidity can reduce the viability of pepper seeds over time, causing  seeds to stagnate. That’s why every seed pack includes a silica gel packet to help keep the seeds dry and fresh. To save seeds for next year, place the seed packet and silica gel packet together in a quart-size freezer bag, seal it, and store it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.
