Birdseye chilies are native to Mexico and were spread by Portuguese traders to Africa and Asia, where they became widely cultivated across India, Africa and Southeast Asia. The small, upward-pointing fruit is less than 1 inch long and delivers intense, sharp heat that builds and lingers. The fruit’s flavor is slightly citrusy and sweet, with smoky, earthy undertones. The fruit is used in Thai, Indonesian, Malaysian, Vietnamese, Filipino, Indian, and African cuisines. Use green fruit for milder heat or fully ripe fruit for maximum intensity in soups, marinades, curries, fish sauces, stir-fries, and are essential in preparing authentic Portuguese peri-peri sauce and Indonesian sambal sauce or paste. Also known as African Red Devil in the southern region of Africa, Cabe Rawit in Indonesia, Kanthari Mulaku in India, and Prik Ki Nu in Thailand, which literally translates to mouse dirt or mouse dropping. Heirloom.

Did you know? Humidity can reduce the viability of pepper seeds over time, causing  seeds to stagnate. That’s why every seed pack includes a silica gel packet to help keep the seeds dry and fresh. To save seeds for next year, place the seed packet and silica gel packet together in a quart-size freezer bag, seal it, and store it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.
