The plant has purplish-black leaves, purple flowers, and Pequin-shaped fruit that ripen from purple to yellow, orange, and finally red, creating a colorful display. The peppers deliver sharp, high heat with a bold flavor that can be slightly salty and bitter. Purple fruit tastes grassier and more herbal, while red ripe fruit develops fruitier, raisin-like sweetness. Use fresh fruit as a garnish or in salsa, noodle bowls, and curries, pickled, or dry, and grind them for spice.
